How App Link QR codes work

An App Link QR code sends visitors to Google Play, the App Store, or a website fallback. A full App Link includes its destinations in a URL fragment. The optional short App Link stores destinations online, so you can update them after printing through your Google account or guest recovery file.

Practical ways to use it

  • Use one printed code to promote both versions of your mobile app.
  • Put an app download link on packaging or an event poster.
  • Share a single link in messages while giving desktop visitors a website fallback.

How to scan it

Scan with a phone camera and open the browser prompt. The chooser uses browser device information to select a configured store. An internet connection is required. Full App Links also require JavaScript; short App Links can redirect without it. Unknown devices can use the visible store buttons.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Store search pages are not app listing URLs; copy the listing for your own app.
  • Without a website fallback, desktop visitors see store choices instead of being redirected.
  • Device detection can be affected by desktop mode or unusual scanners. Test both stores and keep the manual buttons usable.
  • Full App Links need a new link when destinations change. Short App Links need the online service and Google sign-in or a saved guest recovery file for future edits.

Test your QR code before sharing

Keep a clear border around the code, use strong contrast, and test the final file on more than one phone. A beautiful code is only useful if it scans. Read the QR code design guide for logo and color choices, or check QR print sizes and file formats before ordering a print run.
